Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), a safe and effective treatment for those with severe mental illness is performed at Marian Community Hospital. Dr. Satish Mallik, a Psychiatrist with Tri-County Human Services Center and Medical Director of the Mental Health Inpatient Unit at Marian Community Hospital is credentialed to perform this procedure. Marian Community Hospital is the inpatient site for Tri-County Human Services Center, Inc.

ECT has been so refined that treatment is given on an outpatient basis. Through the utilization of anesthesia, controlled oxygenation, and muscle relaxation, ECT treatment is a very safe procedure. The physician, following a prescribed procedure, induces a seizure in the brain. By introducing muscle relaxation, medication and anesthesia, the physician prevents side effects. For several severe and persistent psychiatric illnesses like Schizophrenia, major depression, etc., ECT has proven to be the most effective treatment. It is safe for patients of all ages and has also been utilized safely with pregnant women. ECT is advised when other treatments for a psychiatric condition have failed or when the side effects of medications preclude their use.

Dr. Mallik completed a Fellowship Program in Electroconvulsive Therapy given by the Clinical Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Western Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Mallik, is a graduate of the Ganesh Shankar Vidhyarthi Memorial Medical College of Kanpur University, India. He served his Psychiatric Residency at the Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY where he was Chief Resident for the Department of Psychiatry. Dr. Mallik is a resident of Clarks Summit, PA.
