Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)

Transesophageal Echocardiograms (TEE) are performed at Marian Community Hospital using the  endoscopic equipment purchased by the Marian Community Hospital Auxiliary for the Cardiology Department. A TEE is an echocardiogram of the heart structure that is performed inside the esophagus with the aid of an ultrasound wand that is part of an endoscope. The endoscope is passed down the esophagus after the patient has been given sedation and a liquid anesthetic to numb the throat. High frequency sound waves are directed at the heart area to be tested. The echoes that are picked up create a picture of the heart that is displayed on the video monitor.

The TEE is a very effective diagnostic ultrasound test that allows a specially trained cardiologist to look at the heart’s valves and chambers when the traditional echocardiogram does not provide the cardiologist enough information to make a proper diagnosis. This test gives the cardiologist a better look at the heart structure and blood flow because the person’s ribs and lungs do not obstruct the sound waves.
Marian Community Hospital continues to meet the ever changing needs of the people of Carbondale and the surrounding community by providing for a continuum of care for cardiac testing. If your cardiologist suggests a Transesophageal Echocardiogram, call the Cardiology Department at Marian Community Hospital (570) 281-1027.
