VNUS Closure Procedure

Today, people all over Northeastern Pennsylvania can enjoy a better quality of life, thanks to the innovative vascular surgical procedure being performed at Marian Community Hospital. Specially trained surgeons are skilled in the latest treatment for varicose veins. The VNUS Closure Procedure is considered a minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. Although varicose veins occur in both men and women, the disease is more common to women. Thanks to this minimally invasive vascular procedure, individuals no longer have to suffer with varicose veins. The VNUS Closure procedure is a great improvement over the outdated vein stripping method of treatment. Patients leave the hospital after the procedure. Most patients return to normal activity within a day.

Venous Reflux

Varicose veins, known for their distinctive blue color and bulging appearance on the skin, stem from leaky valves in the veins of the legs. When these valves become damaged or diseased, gravity allows the blood to flow backwards and to pool. This condition, known as Superficial Venous Reflux Disease, results in swelling, pain, fatigue, and varicose veins.

VNUS Closure

During this procedure, the surgeon makes a tiny incision that is less than one fourth inch long at knee level of the affected leg. A small catheter is inserted. Radio frequency energy is then delivered through the catheter causing the vein to collapse. The vein is not removed The blood supply seeks another path. The procedure is done under light sedation and takes approximately one hour to complete.

While this procedure is expected to become the standard treatment for this disease, it may not be applicable to every patient. Patients who suffer from symptomatic varicose veins, venus ulcers, or have a history of phlebitis should ask their doctor if they are candidates for this new breakthrough procedure.
