Volunteer Program Information

Marian Community Hospital is grateful for the services rendered by volunteers over the years and welcomes interested, dedicated individuals to join us as volunteers. Volunteers add to the efficiency and hospitality of the hospital and, at the same time, enhance and expand the care and treatment of the patients.

Volunteer opportunities exist in many departments throughout the hospital for adults and teens.

Adult
Volunteers are appreciated for the generous contribution of time, energy and commitment which they offer to the staff and patients. The interest, experience and education of a volunteer are taken into consideration when a volunteer placement is made. Together with the Volunteer Manager, the volunteer establishes a schedule for volunteer service. A typical volunteer makes a commitment for one day per week for a two or three hour shift. An orientation for new volunteers and ongoing education for all volunteers are provided. Volunteers must abide by hospital-wide and department policies.

Every effort is made to accommodate the potential volunteer’s interest and ability when making a placement. Opportunities exist to assist staff in patient-care areas as well as in other departments where patient contact is limited. Some of the areas include: Business Office, Dietary, Emergency Department, Gift Shop, Information Desk, Health Information Management, Spiritual Care, Human Resources, Public Relations, Print Shop, Materials Management, Radiology, Patient Transport and many other areas. Special project volunteers are those who wish to be contacted on occasion to assist with mailings or health fairs.

Silver Spoons is a volunteer program especially designed to assist patients at meal times. Volunteers are not permitted to feed patients but do perform other tasks to make the meal more appetizing such as seasoning, cutting, warming, etc..

Marian Community Hospital is a site for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of the Voluntary Action Center, apprenticeship program of Tri County Human Services, Inc., and court-ordered community service.

Pre-college or college students with an interest in gaining career experience are welcome. Internships and other programs for academic credit must be handled by the Department Director.

Junior (Student) Volunteers
Many volunteer opportunities exist for students, 13 years old and older, within the hospital. As with the adult program, students may prefer to volunteer in a patient care, clinical or non-clinical area. Student volunteers may volunteer after school one day per week for a two hour shift or on the weekends for a three hour shift. During the summer or other school breaks, students may be scheduled to volunteer during the day. The support of parents and/or guardians is important for the students to have a successful experience as a Junior Volunteer.
